Update
Sorry for the late letter.
I’ve been improving my capacity for deep work and have been using a few tools to keep my mind from wandering (I probably have ADHD).
Anyway, they’ve been working well so I’m hoping to share them with you soon.
If you’re interested, fill out this quiz.
If not, all good. Let’s get to today’s topic!
Last weekend, I was having a conversation with some friends at a kid’s birthday party.
We brought up the fatal flaw of career choice.
People choose the easiest job to get that makes the most money.
But this doesn’t last and often leads to a burnout cycle.
You end up in the same position financially (or worse), the same position mentally (but usually worse), and you’ve guaranteed that you wasted time (the worst).
Money can be made but, time does not rewind.
On the bright side, you’re collecting experience.
The more you get, the better decisions you can make later. But only if you actively make wiser decisions.
One of my buddies wasn’t reflecting on his deep desires. He’s treading the surface:
“I need money (safety) now.”
“I need to maintain my image (status).”
“I need to be accepted by others.”
Now these aren’t conscious thoughts.
These are basic human desires that amplify when life situations haven’t reached the desired expectations.
i.e. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
How do we end up with this miserable cycle of thoughts?
Societal norms.
We’ve evolved to fit in with the tribe, or risk being cast away to fend for ourselves. That puts our survival at risk.
No protection in numbers increases our chance of being hunted by a predator, dying from starvation, and becoming depressed from loneliness.
Our need for validation has only become worse from social media.
The standards for “normal” have been amplified exponentially.
You can now view the lives of millionaires with an unfair advantage, sporting a lambo, a new girl every week, and a lifestyle painted by beaches, luxury, and king status.
This, skewed perception of reality has become modern man’s baseline of “ideal”.
Have we even questioned the day-to-day of this setup?
Do we truly care about any of that material stuff?
I can assure you, that most people haven’t stopped to reflect on what the hell they want.
They look to someone else for the answers instead of questioning the core of their being.
Incoming conspiracy theory: but this was done by design.
The media and society as a whole are heavily influenced by the powers that be. Some call them the Illuminati, the Deep State, or some other name that represents some power figure that’s pulling the strings of human civilization.
The truth is, we don’t know. And we may never know.
So what can we do?
The same thing we always had access to:
Focus only on what we can control.
Ignore everything else.
Politics
Your family’s opinions
Your friend’s expectations
Social media fabrication
All of it.
Be ruthless with your personal development and cut off anything and anyone who is holding you back.
The big kingpins you’re idolizing?
This is their secret.
They aren’t focused on other people’s drama and accomplishments. They’ve shed blood, sweat, tears, and heartache over developing two things:
Character traits
Valuable skills
All the while, you’re overly concerned about your football team’s ranking or what the girl next door posted on Instagram.
I can guarantee Lolita ain’t gonna be your wife and support your legacy brother.
Reflect on your actions and increase your value.
Because your life depends on it.
Hope this helps!
Next week, I’ll be showing you how to negate distractions, especially from social media.
I’ve asked my closest online confidants and the results are pretty clear. We all want
better focus
more money
and the ability to manage multiple interests
So I’ll be writing a guide on the systems I use. You can become part of the conversation ↓
P.S. Please take 5 minutes for the short quiz below.
I want to help you where you need more clarity.
