A Beginner Creator's Guide to Content Mastery

Discover what content you should create using the 3 Life Pillars of Mastery.

Most content creators get stuck on what to create.

They can’t figure out their niche and even if they do, they don’t know what to talk about.

This causes a number of problems. They get:

  • Anxious

  • Insecure

  • Burnt out

  • Confused

  • Overwhelmed

and ultimately quit in the pursuit of monetizing their creations.

This was me for 11 months.

Nearly 1 year ago, I started creating videos on YouTube after 8 years of procrastination.

I used to want to be a fitness YouTuber like old-school Elliott Hulse, Omar Isuf, and Frank Yang (the physical aesthetics phase).

One day I was training in my gym shed, focused on another set of military presses. I had a series of videos playing in the background:

Different categories on content creation, starting a business, productivity, etc.

Personal development stuff.

As I psyche myself up for a heavy set, I start hearing words that resonate in my ears:

“One-person business”

“Productize yourself”

“Make money online”

“Work less. Earn more”

“Monetize your interests”

I stop my set and pause. I go back to my iPad and replay what this douchey-looking white guy was talking about.

In my mind, I’m like: “What does this guy know? Is this actually possible? Sounds like what I’ve been looking for.”

This was when I found Dan Koe.

After doing some research and looking into more of his videos, I start to realize this guy isn’t so douchey after all.

He knows his shit.

I found his website and products; Modern Mastery stood out to me. 5 days of research later, I was convinced and joined the community.

Of course, I started a Twitter account and played the Money Twitter game.

I made a ton of mistakes.

I got lost in shiny objects.

I followed what the big creators told me to do.

I burnt out more times than I could count.

I even compromised my values on occasion (not proud of it).

A lot of fucking up happens when you’re new.

I wish I had more guidance on this journey but thankfully the losses have taught me a lot.

Creating content is tough, especially when you have endless options.

I tell you this story because I’ve been through a lot of mistakes and I’d like to give you some tools to avoid at least some of them.

Today I want to make content creation easier for you by showing you how to figure out what you should post about.

Why create content?

First, a few notes on why you should create content.

Remember that story above?

Before that period, I was addicted to social media.

It was sad.

I’d be glued to my phone, even around my family.

I didn’t want to be that dad who doesn’t have his wife and children’s respect.

You know those dads who look miserable?

  • Fat and low energy (the dadbod)

  • No motivation to play with the kids

  • No urge to get intimate with the wife

  • Doing degenerate things like watching porn

  • Succumbing to the pull of junk food at every sign of boredom.

No, not me.

Redirecting my focus saved me from a potentially miserable existence.

In short, content creation saved my life.

I used to get dopamine from scrolling short videos.

Now, I get it from creating those videos, writing online, and networking with a close group of friends.

Here are some of the benefits I’ve experienced:

Gumroad affiliate revenue

  • Broke a ton of limiting beliefs by making my 1st dollar online

    • Made over $240 online with affiliates indirectly selling someone else’s product.

  • Recorded over 100 videos of myself as an introvert who hates public speaking

  • Gained 900+ followers on Twitter(X)

    • Formed a business mastermind of 5 and great friendships with people who keep me accountable

The creative outlet for sharing my ideas gives me a sense of purpose.

I have a ton of lessons I can share with my kids.

But wait, there’s more!

  • You can make as much or as little money as you want depending on your level of skill, patience, and effort

  • There are 1000s of ways to create and you can choose which way best suits your strengths, preferences, and interests

  • You get to meet people similar to you that you would never get to know locally.

  • You can form lifelong friendships or business partnerships.

Opportunities are endless.

If you’re a big explorer like me, you will have your hands full.

There is always more to learn in terms of platforms, skills, and methods that can push your business or personal brand further in impact and income.

What do I post about?

Great question!

I use a system called: the Life Pillars of Mastery.

A set of 3-4 pillars that you can use to intersect and mix the things that are important and valuable to your life.

  1. The Money-Making Topic (a skill or expertise) – Think of a huge transformation you’ve had or a skill you have more experience in than most people. i.e. fitness transformation, video editing, email marketing

  2. The Passionate Interest  Something you can talk about all day. What gives you energy? What puts you in a flow state that you can get lost in? i.e. writing, philosophy, mental performance, psychology, anime

  3. The Development Area – Any area that you want to improve in or want to explore further. Think of this as your build-in-public topic that you share your progress as you make progress towards it. i.e. building an audience, creating a coding project, journey to losing 50 lbs, becoming a high performing father

With these interests, you can pick broad categories and then split them into 2-3 subcategories.

Now you have 6-9 topics you can talk about.

The thing that will set you apart from other creators copying everyone else is the intersection of these interests mixed with your story.

Use these 3 types of content to engage your audience:

3 types of valuable content

  • Inspire them (stories)

  • Entertain them (personality)

  • Educate them (advice and value)

Action step: Write out your content pillars, your transformations, and the problems you’ve solved for yourself with the solution. Then, write 1 piece of content for each type.

Hope this was helpful.
